Ethan Zars-was born in South Bend, Indiana in 1994 and moved with his family to Würzburg, Germany when he was three years old.  Five years later, he moved back to the United States to Columbia, Missouri where he graduated from Hickman High School in 2013.  That fall, Ethan started his undergraduate studies in Chemistry at the University of Missouri-Columbia where he conducted research in the group of Rainer Glaser.  Ethan worked on mechanistic studies of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky oscillating chemical reaction and calculations of compositions of complex equilibria.  Ethan’s work with Dr. Glaser resulted in three articles and numerous poster presentations including one at the ACS National Meeting in New Orleans in 2018.  Ethan supplemented his Mizzou experience with a year abroad studying chemistry at Eberhard-Karls Universität Tübingen in Germany.  By the time of his graduation in 2018, Ethan earned minors in Biology and Mathematics, served as the treasurer of Alpha Chi Sigma, was awarded the ACS Undergraduate Award in Physical Chemistry, and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.  Ethan developed a fascination with inorganic chemistry as an undergraduate that led him to Philadelphia to pursue his doctoral studies at the University of Pennsylvania in 2018.  Ethan joined the research group of Daniel Mindiola and his research focuses on the reactivity of high valent iron complexes with nitrogen-containing compounds.  Outside of the lab, Ethan enjoys any pursuit that takes him out of the city.  Hiking, bicycling, and fly fishing are a few of his favorite activities.
